This artwork is based on Pourquoi! Naitre esclave!, a sculpture created by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux in 1868. The portrait bust was originally conceived as an allegory of Africa for a fountain sculpture – depicting a formerly enslaved woman, bearing a broken shackle around her ankle.
